Subject: Melodrama on the High Seas
Subject: Melodrama on the High Seas
As another reviewer noted, what starts off as some kind of comedic farce, turns into a melodramatic morality tale. Natalie Moorehead (Verna Wilson/Wendall) makes a good vamp as she is transformed by love from a blackmailer to an honest woman. Jack Mulhall (Dick Randolph/Rowland) is a bit stiff and breezy, as if he were playing in a romantic comedy, although he shows a little depth towards the end. Roy D'Arcy (Juan de Leon) is Moorehead's partner in crime and looks every bit the snake he is. The other actors are adequate in their parts. Although the plot ia nothing great, I found it engrossing enough to sit through for the drama at the end. Moorehead's walk-off at the end is just a walk-off, but a well done closing shot. This film is also known as "Love Bound".

This is a corny movie, but I hate to say it - I loved it. The same old Vamp story turned well.... I won't make it a spoiler!

What looked like a fairly lively romantic comedy through about half of the movie ended up as a melodrama where a golddigger will do the right thing for the man she loves, but can never have. After the tone shifted, and it became clear this was a morality play, the film became quite dull. The cast of B-movie actors couldn't pull this one through. My eyes glazed over.
I downloaded the 512Kb MPEG4 file. Video and audio quality were good. Made from a good print, there are missing frames which garble some dialog.

Wilson (Natalie Morehead) files suit against married millionaire John Randolph (Montague Love) for breach of promise. On the verge of collecting $100,000 Verna discovers that her former lover (Roy D'Arcy) has broken out of jail and is heading after her. She books passage on an ocean liner bound for Europe. During the voyage, Verna is confronted by another man -- Dick Randolph (Jack Mulhall. Verna's ex-lover catches up with her and the result is murder. But who done it (and who is it "done" to?) Love Bound was also released as Murder on the High Seas and Souls for Sale.
Moorehead was a very popular star in her day, 69 movies under her belt. She is excellent here, sometimes spine chilling. The cinematography is great.
The only criticism is that the story is slow to formulate but picks up the pace later.
Please watch this one, I don't want to be the only Natalie Moorehead fan. You will recognize her from "The Thin Man" and many other films you've watched and realize how wonderful she was.

Five minutes of research later, I Googled the cover of Time magazine in the deck chair scene. March 2, 1931.
For its time, it's about standard. Bad acting, missed cues left in because stock was so comparatively expensive. Moves slowly, even for its time, tho. Better examples of the sort exist.
